Srinagar, July 2: The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Srinagar, has summoned the Editor of Fair Voice News in connection with the alleged interview and recording of a school-going child without obtaining the informed consent of the child’s parent or legal guardian and without the knowledge or permission of the concerned school authorities.

The move comes after a video featuring the child commenting on Education Minister Sakina Itoo over the issue of summer vacations went viral on social media, triggering a debate on journalistic ethics and the protection of minors in media coverage.

According to the summons issued by Dr. Khair-ul-Nisa, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Srinagar, the committee took cognisance of the matter after it came to its notice that representatives of Fair Voice News allegedly interviewed and recorded the child without obtaining the mandatory consent of the parent or legal guardian and without informing the concerned school authorities.

The summons said that if the allegations are found to be true, such actions may amount to a violation of the child’s rights under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, wherever applicable, as well as the media reporting safeguards issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which seek to protect the identity, privacy, dignity and best interests of children.

In exercise of the powers vested in it under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, the committee has directed the Editor of Fair Voice News to appear before it on July 3, 2026, at 12 noon at the office of the Child Welfare Committee, Srinagar.

The Editor has been asked to appear along with the reporter or interviewer concerned, the cameraperson and any other media personnel present during the interview, if any. The committee has also sought a written explanation regarding the circumstances under which the interview was conducted.

The Editor has been directed to produce copies of the recorded interview, the published or broadcast material, any consent or authorisation relied upon, and any other relevant documents in connection with the case.

The summon warns that failure to appear before the committee or to furnish the required information may invite appropriate action in accordance with the law.
