Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad customs officials seized 61 luxury and collector-edition pens from an Indian flyer, an IIT graduate working in Japan, after he arrived at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport from Japan via Ho Chi Minh City. The flyer is currently seen as an unsuspecting carrier of the pens sans duty and not as a part of a smuggling ring.Officials said the passenger was intercepted after suspicious images appeared during baggage scanning. A detailed check of his hand luggage allegedly revealed high-value pens concealed without declaration.Among the seized pens were Montblanc Meisterstück Solitaire Pinstripe Vermeil, Visconti Millennium Arc Demonstrator Limited Edition, Parker Duofold Mandarin Yellow and Sakura Nakaya models. Officials said many of the pens are rare collectors’ pieces and can sell for Rs 40,000 or more in India, with some fetching far higher prices in niche markets.Customs said the goods were seized under the Customs Act, 1962. The final valuation will be carried out by a chartered engineer. The pens are currently believed to be worth lakhs of rupees based on market estimates. Sources said the passenger, a tech professional earning around Rs 4 lakh a month, claimed was handed the package by a friend in Japan for delivery in India. He allegedly told investigators he had asked for bills but was told they were not needed.Investigators currently suspect he may have been used as an unwitting carrier rather than acting as a regular smuggling conduit, though questioning is continuing and the sender is also under scrutiny.Sources said the seizure points to a niche grey market for premium writing instruments, where rare fountain pens and limited editions are traded among collectors and dealers, often at prices well above standard retail rates.
