Kolkata: Reports of concrete falling off from the ceiling of a toilet in the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital women’s hostel have put the spotlight on the state-run medical college once again. Though no one was injured in the incident, students as well as junior doctors have expressed concern over lack of maintenance in the hostels. On Monday, the students’ body submitted a memorandum to the college principal for immediate repair and proper maintenance of the hostels.According to sources, the incident happened late on Sunday night on the fourth floor of the women’s hostel. An intern had just stepped out of the wash room when a part of the ceiling chipped off.“She was lucky that she escaped unhurt. The concrete mass could have hit her on the head if she was late even by a minute,” said a fellow intern.Students said that concrete chunks falling off the ceiling had become quite regular in rooms, especially in the LM Boys’ Hostel. They claimed that despite numerous complaints, the college officials maintained that the health department was not releasing funds for maintenance.“The ceiling in our hostel has become precarious. We hope the college officials will take immediate steps and not wait till someone gets injured,” said Sagnik Pal, the campus welfare secretary of the student body.Right after getting the reports, the college officials, along with PWD engineers, inspected both the boys’ and girls’ hostels. Officials said they will be sending a report to Swasthya Bhawan on their findings so that the health department sanctions funds for repair and maintenance.
