Sunday, August 23

Chennai, The CPI (M) on Sunday strongly condemned the violent attack on its senior leaders in Kallakurichi district and urged the police to immediately arrest all individuals involved.

According to a statement issued by CPI(M) Tamil Nadu State Secretary P Shanmugam, the incident occurred on the night of August 21 near Ulundurpet.

CPI(M) Kallakurichi District Secretary T M Jaishankar, former District Secretary T Ezhumalai, District Committee Member T S Mohan, and their car driver were targeted by an eight-member gang near Kiliyur village after completing preparatory work for an upcoming demonstration.

The party stated that the assailants, hailing from Vadamambakkam village, abused the leaders, smashed the car’s windows, damaged the party flag, and brutally assaulted the occupants. The injured leaders received medical treatment at a hospital and have since returned home.

The CPI(M) alleged that the attack was premeditated and linked to the party’s agitation against a former Vadamambakkam village panchayat president, who had allegedly misappropriated funds meant for 22 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) without constructing them. The party claimed that two sons of the former panchayat president were among the eight attackers.
