Nagpur: To bolster on-ground police presence, official vehicles assigned to senior officers will be on patrol even when officers are on leave, resting, out of station, or in their official residences. The initiative described as a “moving presence” strategy by police commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil, aims to keep police vehicles equipped with sirens and beacon lights on duty 24×7 at key roads, residential areas, vulnerable locations, and strategic points across the city, without additional manpower. The order applies to vehicles attached to officers of all ranks, including senior police officials, assistant commissioners of police (ACPs), and officers posted in police stations, irrespective of whether they belong to IPS, state police service, or other cadres. Even in the absence of the officer concerned, the vehicle will remain available for policing and patrol duties.Officials said the objective is to ensure a stronger visual police presence across the city. “Regular movement of police vehicles, coupled with flashing lights and sirens is expected to serve as a deterrent to criminal activity while enhancing citizens’ sense of security,” said sources close to the commissioner’s office. The commissioner believes that the presence of a police vehicle at prominent locations, checkpoints, or public areas can discourage potential offenders and reinforce public confidence. The strategy is particularly focused on curbing street crimes and improving overall civic discipline. As part of the initiative, vehicles may either be kept roaming or strategically stationed at important public locations to maintain the impression of constant police vigilance.Welcoming the move, a senior police officer said the concept could prove effective if implemented properly. “Instead of remaining parked inside police bungalows, these vehicles will now be visible on roads, residential lanes, and at public places. This will instil fear among criminals,” the officer said. The measure forms part of broader efforts by commissioner Nangre Patil to make policing more visible, proactive, and responsive. Officials clarified that vehicles will be operated by designated drivers and authorised personnel to ensure proper utilisation in accordance with departmental protocols.Citizens can expect more police vehicles roaming in the city, especially during evening and night hours. The initiative is likely to cover busy commercial areas, residential neighbourhoods, and crime-prone zones.
