Ahmedabad: A woman accused her cousin of stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 8.10 lakh from her residence in Naranpura. The 37-year-old complainant, who works as an insurance agent, stated that the incident took place on Feb 8.The complainant stated that a cousin sister from Vasna visited her home. Her cousin needed money so she gave two gold rings to the complainant. “My cousin asked us to give her Rs 70,000 by keeping the rings as a pledge,” the complaint stated. The family checked the rings and returned them to her, saying the value did not match the amount sought.After spending some time, the cousin allegedly asked to change clothes before leaving for a religious visit. “She went inside my mother’s bedroom to change,” the complainant stated. She added that the cousin stayed inside for a long time and then left, saying her ride arrived.On Thursday, when the complainant’s mother opened her cupboard, she found that two gold bangles (about 3 tolas) worth Rs 4.8 lakh, one gold mangalsutra (about 16 gram) worth Rs 2.50 lakh, and two gold rings (about 5 gram) worth Rs 80,000 were missing, the complainant stated.The complaint noted, “After Feb 8, no one else came to our house,” and alleged there was “no other way to enter” the bedroom. When confronted, the cousin allegedly denied taking the jewellery but expressed willingness to pay for the loss. The complaint was registered with the Naranpura police for theft in a dwelling house.
