Guwahati: A court in Guwahati has showcaused Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Jitendra Singh and Bhupesh Baghel over their recent allegation against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The court of the District and Sessions Judge Kamrup Metropolitan district also restrained the three Congress leaders from publishing, circulating and disseminating any further defamatory statements against the Chief Minister.

The court order came after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has recently approached the court over defamatory statements and allegations made against him by the three Congress leaders including Gogoi, Jitendra Singh and Baghel.

The Assam Chief Minister had filed a defamation case seeking Rs 500 crore against the three Congress leaders–Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi for making false, malicious and defamatory allegations against him through a press conference.

Congress leaders during a press conference on February 4 this year had made a series of corruption allegations against Sarma. The opposition leaders have accused Sarma of holding illegal land assets worth Rs. 12000 crore.

“It is evident that the petitioner is the Chief Minister of Assam having high status in the society and his reputation has suffered before the society and he has to suffer mentally due to the impugned defamatory publications by the defendants without any documents,” the court observed.
The court order said that the interim order is passed to restrain the defendants from making any further defamatory statements.
