Sasaram: A married couple was allegedly shot dead by unidentified assailants while sleeping on the rooftop of their house at Banarsia village under Sasaram Muffasil police station area in Rohtas district early Monday morning, triggering panic in the locality.According to police, the deceased were identified as Mani Bhushan Kumar (45) and his wife, Nanki Devi (40). The attack took place around 2am when the assailants allegedly reached the house and opened fire on the couple. Both died on the spot. The couple ran a food outlet near Beda Mor. They are survived by four children, two sons, Abhishek and Sunny, and two daughters.Family members said Nanki’s first husband, Krishna Bind, died of an illness about five years ago. Following his death, she and her brother-in-law, Mani Bhushan, ran the food outlet together. The two later entered into a relationship and got married.Their son, Abhishek Kumar, said he heard a loud sound from the rooftop around 2am and tried to come out of his room, but found the door locked from outside. He raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to rush to the house and open the door. When family members and neighbours reached the rooftop, they found the couple lying in a pool of blood. Both had succumbed to their injuries.On receiving information, local police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies to Sasaram Sadar Hospital for postmortem. Rohtas SP Raj said, “Police have launched an investigation and are questioning family members and local residents to ascertain the motive behind the killings and identify the assailants. No arrests have been made so far.”
