Kanpur: A jeweller in Kanpur’s Chakeri area was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.15 thousand by a married couple, who sold off their fake silver anklets, passing them off as genuine, police said on Saturday.According to victim, Daluaram Soni, owner of ‘Vijay Jewellers’, the accused couple, visited his shop and claimed the family faced financial hardship and that his children and wife were ill, and sought to sell silver anklets.The accused sold anklets weighing approximately 730 grams in three separate transactions, for which the goldsmith paid Rs 1 lakh 10 thousand.However, the victim grew suspicious about the shine and weight of the anklets and got them thoroughly examined. The examination revealed that the anklets were completely fake.The accused was called back on May 29 to collect the remaining Rs 5 thousand. As soon as he arrived, he was apprehended and handed over to the police.During police interrogation, the accused, identified as Himanshu Gautam revealed that he worked as a tailor in Delhi and came to Kanpur after Holi. He said he purchased the fake anklets for Rs 3 thousand from a shop at Chowk on Meston Road.Chakeri police station in-charge, Ajay Prakash Mishra, said that a case was being registered on the basis of the written complaint, and further investigation is underway.
