Bhubaneswar: The special crime unit of city police on Wednesday arrested a couple for allegedly duping multiple investors of approximately Rs 12.6 crore as part of a gold trading scam.Ramesh Chandra Majhi and his wife Anisha Subudhi were arrested near Biju Patnaik College following a complaint lodged by Bholanath Mohanty, the managing director of a private company. The couple allegedly duped Mohanty of Rs 5.6 crore between 2022 and 2023.The investigation revealed that the accused couple, who initially resided in Nayapalli, posed as authorised gold traders, presenting forged RBI documents to gain the investors’ trust. They collected investments through bank transfers and cash, providing multiple undertakings promising returns. Subsequently, the couple vacated their Nayapalli residence and could not be traced.“The accused was operating a well-planned scheme, targeting multiple victims. We discovered at least 15 other investors who were defrauded of approximately Rs 7 crore,” a police officer said.As many as 10 victims met with the police commissioner seeking justice. The police are now taking steps to recover their invested money.The couple was produced before the court and authorities have urged other victims to file formal complaints at their respective police stations.
