Mangaluru: Police probing the counterfeit currency racket busted in Uppinangady have found that the accused were still preparing to circulate fake notes and had not distributed any counterfeit currency.On July 16, police busted an alleged counterfeit currency printing racket operating from a building at Adinje in Kaniyooru village of Belthangady taluk and arrested seven persons.The ongoing investigation indicates that the group had arrived in Uppinangady about a month ago. So far, there is no evidence that they distributed counterfeit notes. Police said the timeline of the purchase of various equipment and materials by the accused is consistent with this finding.The probe revealed that the accused had attempted to print counterfeit currency on earlier occasions but had failed to perfect the process. Investigators believe that, in the present case, they had rectified the shortcomings of their previous attempts and were preparing to execute the operation successfully.Police said Ibrahim had previously been booked in two counterfeit currency-related cases. Based on the evidence gathered so far, the investigation team suspects that he was one of the key masterminds behind the conspiracy.Police also suspect that some of the other accused may have been involved in circulating counterfeit currency in the past. Their criminal backgrounds are being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.A few accused are still absconding.
