Margao: Residents of Costi-Kalay in Sanguem have protested against a piggery in the village, alleging that it is contaminating local water sources and posing a health risk.A large number of villagers, including women, gathered recently to voice their anger. They warned that authorities would be responsible if the standoff led to any untoward incident, especially with Ganesh Chaturthi approaching.Sanguem mamlatdar Viraj Malkarni, along with Curchorem police and health officials, visited the site and took stock of the situation. They assured the protesting villagers that a detailed report would be sent to senior officials for action.The villagers alleged that effluents from the piggery are being discharged into a nearby stream, polluting the water and making nearby wells unfit for use. They said the issue has persisted despite repeated complaints to the authorities.They also claimed that a similar complaint last year had led to an inspection by the Goa State Pollution Control Board, but no findings or action were communicated to them.Sources said the unit was originally approved for goat-rearing. The permission was revoked after it was found to be operating as a piggery. However, the proprietor secured a stay from the directorate of panchayats against the panchayat’s order, allowing the unit to continue operating.The panchayat has backed the protesters, who have warned of intensifying their agitation if no action is taken.
