Kolkata: Kolkata Police averted a suicide after a 32-year-old man e-mailed Tollygunge police station on Thursday night, threatening suicide, with no name or address provided. An officer said, “The man is unemployed and survived on part-time gigs. This might have possibly triggered distress.”Officers from Tollygunge PS immediately alerted the South Division’s cyber cell, which contacted Google and retrieved the sender’s IP details in just 40 minutes. Simultaneously, Tollygunge PS replied to the e-mail, urging the man to share his details and requesting him not act hastily.Cops traced the e-mail to an area in Netaji Nagar and went to an address linked to the man. DC south-suburban Charu Sharma revealed the house belonged to the man, but he vacated it years ago. Officers then obtained his wife’s phone number. She confirmed that he was safe, providing his current rented address in Garia.A team of officers from Netaji Nagar visited his Garia residence on Friday and counselled the man. “He’s stable now,” DC Sharma told TOI. Police urged citizens facing crises to contact helplines like ‘100′ or mental health services.
