Silchar: Patharkandi police in Assam’s Sribhumi district seized illegal foreign liquor worth more than Rs 5 lakh that was concealed beneath cartons of eggs and arrested the driver during a late-night naka-checking operation on Sunday.Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Patharkandi officer-in charge Bishwajyoti Deuri intercepted a pick-up vehicle at Moina under the police station limits. The vehicle appeared to be transporting egg cartons, but a detailed search uncovered 59 cartons of foreign liquor hidden underneath the consignment.Police said the liquor was allegedly being transported to Mizoram using the egg cartons as camouflage to evade detection.The driver was arrested on the spot, and the vehicle and liquor consignment were seized. Police said investigators are questioning the accused to identify other members of the smuggling network, trace the source of the liquor and ascertain its intended destination, adding that further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
