Kolkata: The Bengal Police has intensified their crackdown on digital misinformation, issuing three warnings over the last five days to alert the public against fake posts of a sensitive nature being circulated in connection with the assembly elections. According to cops, the warnings issued on Tuesday and Wednesday highlight a growing trend of malicious actors repurposing old or unrelated footage from other regions to incite communal or political tension within Bengal.Investigators have identified that the majority of these fraudulent posts originated on X, prompting cops to release the original clippings alongside the fake ones to provide clarity to netizens.One video being flagged depicts a protest at Old Delhi in 2020, which is being claimed to be a recent incident from Bengal. Another widely shared clip involving a violent confrontation in Tripura on April 12, 2026, is being falsely presented as having occurred in Bengal. A third video from Feb 2022 is being recirculated as current news.Sources suggest the number of FIRs this time is likely to exceed previous records.
