Jaisalmer: The family of Rajesh Meghwal (40), a former contractual employee of Central Cooperative Bank, brought his body to the premises, holding the administration responsible for his death Thursday afternoon. The family and locals raised slogans against the bank and its managing director and sought justice. The family told TOI that Meghwal, who had been with the bank for 16 years, was among the 11 contractual employees whose services were terminated through July 27 order. Police reached the bank and intervened after which the body was shifted to a mortuary.Meghwal’s relative Om Prakash said he was the sole earning member of his family. On July 28, Meghwal reportedly pleaded with the officials to reconsider their decision, but his request was ignored. The family claimed that the sudden loss of employment devastated Meghwal and he reportedly stopped eating and became severely distressed. As his health deteriorated, he was admitted to Jawahir Hospital on July 29, from where doctors referred him to Jodhpur for advance treatment. He died there Thursday. The tragedy struck the family on the same day that they were observing the 12th-day ritual of Meghwal’s late grandmother.The family and locals continued their sit-in protest outside the mortuary, refusing to end the demonstration till the demands were addressed.Responding to the allegations, the bank administration clarified that the affected workers were not its direct employees and had joined through a placement agency. According to the bank, their services ended after the agreement with the placement agency expired. The bank maintained that it had no further role or responsibility in the matter.Meghwal is survived by his parents, wife and two sons aged 14 and eight.The incident has sparked widespread public concern and renewed debate over job security and welfare of long-serving contractual employees.
