New Delhi: Congress on Friday demanded a Supreme Court-supervised probe into the Ayodhya Ram temple donation embezzlement case. It said the reported resignation of Champat Rai, a key official of the Ayodhya Ram temple trust and a senior Vishva Hindu Parishad leader, an FIR and arrest of some staff members were not sufficient steps because the theft couldn’t have taken place without the connivance of more senior people in authority.

The main Opposition party also sought dissolution of the temple trust and intervention of the PM in the matter.

“This resignation (of Champat Rai) is not going to solve the problem. If loot worth hundreds or thousands of crores and such a massive betrayal of faith have taken place, then the money did not go only to Champat Rai,” Congress leader Rajeev Shukla said at an AICC presser. “That is why the matter should be investigated under the supervision of the Supreme Court. Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi should intervene immediately,” he said.
AICC general secretary (org) KC Venugopal posted on X: “After using Ayodhya for their divisive politics, BJP-RSS looted from donations of ordinary devotees and made a complete mockery of their sentiment.”
