Guwahati: Three political parties in Assam led by the Congress have joined hands to challenge the BJP-led NDA in the Assam assembly elections next month.

Gaurav Gogoi-led Congress party has stitched the alliance with Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) led by Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Raijor Dal headed by Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi.

This follows the conclusion of protracted seat-sharing talks with Raijor Dal. Putting an end to longstanding speculation, the Congress and the Raijor Dal finally signed a coalition agreement for the polls. The agreement was formally concluded during a press conference at Gaurav Gogoi’s residence in Jorhat.

Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi called the alliance a historic opportunity for the people of Jorhat. He said, “It is now time to replace a Chief Minister who only talks, with a capable leader. For this, the people must ensure a massive victory through their votes.”

Raijor Dal will fight the polls in 11 constituencies. The party will contest Sivasagar, Dalgaon, Dhing, Sissiborgaon, Digboi, Bokakhat, Manas, Tezpur, Kaliabor, Margherita, and Mariani. Additionally, Goalpara East and Gauripur have been designated as “friendly contest” seats, where both parties will field candidates. “In 2021, we had envisioned an alliance between AJP, Congress, and Raijor Dal,” said Gaurav Gogoi. “As we could not come together then, all of us suffered losses. This time, the people wanted us to unite, and many leaders have made sacrifices to make this alliance possible,” he said.
He added that parties such as Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), and All-Party Hill Leaders Conference have also come together as part of the broader opposition understanding.

Akhil Gogoi said, “After several rounds of talks, Congress and Raijor Dal have reached a conclusion. For the 2026 Assembly elections, both parties will contest together as an alliance.”

Raijor Dal had initially sought 15 seats. Congress has already declared a list of 87 candidates and is likely to contest in 100 seats. AJP has been allotted 10 seats, Left parties three, while two seats will be contested by All-Party Hill Leaders Conference. AJP was formed as a reaction to the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
