Lucknow: Defunct and faulty street lights on several busy roads in the city have raised safety concerns among commutersAs many stretches remain poorly lit after sunset, commuters say the problem has been persisting for weeks despite complaints to the authorities.Key locations near the heritage zone include Khun-Khunji road in Chowk, old and new Pakka Pul and several stretches around Lucknow University were found to be inadequately lit during night.Residents told TOI about multiple dark spots at important junctions, increasing the risk of accidents and crime. They also said that the absence of proper lighting has made daily commuting difficult.“Many street lights either remain switched off or flicker for a few minutes before going dark on the stretch between old and new Pucca Pul. It becomes risky to travel at night,” said Mohammad Arif, a shopkeeper in the Chowk.LU students also expressed concern. “We often have evening classes and coaching. Walking back to hostels in dark stretches feels unsafe, particularly for girl students,” said Shreya Singh, a postgraduate student.Women commuters said poorly lit roads add to their sense of vulnerability. “Dark roads make it uncomfortable to travel alone. Proper lighting is essential for safety and also acts as a deterrent to anti-social elements,” said a working professional.LMC chief engineer Manoj Prabhat said complaints are being compiled and maintenance teams will be sent to identify and repair faulty lights.
