Pune: District collector Jitendra Dudi on Thursday directed the implementation of stringent measures to curb road accident fatalities across the district, saying an average of 900 people were killed in accidents in the district each year, requiring coordinated and decisive action to avert the casualties.“Traffic rule violations are a major contributor to congestion and accidents. Strict enforcement is critical, but citizens must also practise self-discipline,” Dudi said while chairing a meeting of the district road safety committee at the collectorate.

The collector emphasised that violators must face firm penal action and reiterated that licences of vehicle owners who fail to clear fines should be revoked. Around 3,000 licences have already been cancelled, he said, stressing the urgency of addressing accident black spots. “A detailed survey and immediate rectification work were essential to prevent further loss of life,” the collector said.Reviewing earlier instructions, Dudi said the regional transport department had completed its black spot survey. “Of the 42 identified locations, work has commenced on 15, while the departments concerned have been directed to address the rest,” he said. Considering rising traffic in the Hinjewadi and Chakan areas, Dudi also called for special measures in these corridors. The collector directed MSRDC, NHAI and PWD to initiate action against unauthorised hoardings under their jurisdictions. After issuing 21-day notices, remaining illegal structures must be removed, he said. On ghat roads, Dudi ordered a ban on overtaking by lane-cutting and instructed authorities to install sufficient warning and cautionary signboards. He said speed breakers should not be installed on main roads. “At hazardous junctions, they should instead be placed on approach or secondary roads, strictly adhering to Indian Roads Congress (IRC) norms and proper markings,” he said, suggesting smooth speed-calming techniques similar to those used during the Pune Grand Tour Cycle Race, in line with IRC guidelines. To address accidents near Navale bridge, Dudi said a joint inspection would be carried out on Monday by a team from IIT Delhi, along with NHAI officials, the police and the municipal corporation. The meeting was attended by PWD superintending engineer Bharatkumar Bawiskar, Pune city traffic DCP Himmat Jadhav, assistant regional transport officer Swapnil Bhosale, Pimpri Chinchwad official Rahul Jadhav, Baramati official Surendra Nikam, NHAI project director Sanjay Kadam and representatives from several social organisations.
