Durgapur: ED officers conducted a fresh raid at the residence of police officer Monoranjan Mondal in the City Centre area of Durgapur in West Burdwan district on Wednesday morning in connection with an ongoing coal smuggling investigation.According to sources, ED officials, accompanied by central paramilitary forces, reached Mondal’s residence early in the morning and carried out a search operation that lasted for around 5 and a half hours.Before leaving the premises, the officials did not comment on the ongoing investigation. However, they pasted a notice on the gate directing Mondal to appear at the ED office on March 13. Sources said he earlier failed to respond to 2 summons issued by the agency.Mondal, who previously served as the officer-in-charge of Budbud police station, is under investigation for his alleged involvement in a syndicate linked to illegal coal and sand extraction from mines operated by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL).This is the second time in the last 2 months that the ED searched his residence.Earlier, on Feb 3, 2024, the agency conducted a raid at the same location that continued for nearly 10 hours and led to the seizure of several documents as part of the probe.
