COIMBATORE: Chief minister M K Stalin on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for a Nilgiri tahr conservation centre near Semmozhi Park in Coimbatore. The CM laid the foundation stone through video conferencing.The centre will be constructed at a cost of Rs 25.14 crore by the forest department. It is meant for conservation of the state animal and to create public awareness.This centre is a flagship initiative under the Project Nilgiri Tahr. It will showcase ecosystems of the Western Ghats, research and documentation related to the Nilgiri tahr, the habitats of the animal, the living environment of the tribal people in close association with the Nilgiri tahr.In a post on X, additional chief secretary to the dept of environment and climate change Supriya Sahu stated, “The centre will create immersive interpretation spaces on the life and landscape of the Nilgiri tahr and facilitate scientific research, conservation education and capacity building. It will also serve as a hub for public awareness, policy dialogue and knowledge exchange.”
