Ganderbal/Kargil, Aug 2: Heavy rainfall accompanied by cloudbursts triggered flash flood situations in parts of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district and Ladakh’s Kargil district on Sunday. While significant damage was reported in Ganderbal’s Safapora area, officials said no damage or loss of life was reported from the Tumail area of Kargil.

In Ganderbal’s Safapora, a cloudburst triggered a sudden surge of water that overflowed local drains and streams, inundating several residential localities within minutes. Floodwaters entered houses, shops, orchards and low-lying areas, damaging household belongings, electronic appliances, furniture, food stocks and merchandise. Roads and interior lanes were submerged under water, mud and debris, disrupting normal life and affecting vehicular movement.

Residents said many families, with the help of neighbours, spent hours draining water from their homes and shops while trying to salvage their belongings. Fruit orchards and agricultural fields also remained inundated, raising fears of damage to standing crops and this season’s harvest.

Locals urged the district administration to immediately assess the losses, provide compensation to affected families, deploy dewatering pumps and sanitation teams, and restore damaged infrastructure. They also demanded long-term flood mitigation measures, including strengthening drainage channels and constructing flood-control structures.

Meanwhile, a cloudburst was also reported from the Tumail area of Kargil district. However, officials confirmed that no damage to property or infrastructure and no loss of life was reported from the area. The incident remained limited, and the situation was reported to be under control.

Meanwhile, the district administration and Jammu & Kashmir Police remained on alert in the affected areas, closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with field officials to ensure timely response. Authorities said the situation was under watch.
