Nagpur: Unabated garbage dumping has choked a roadside drain near Shree Binzani City College in Reshimbagh, increasing the risk of flooding during the monsoon and raising fears of a disease outbreak.A TOI visit found heaps of mixed waste, including household refuse, plastic and other non-biodegradable material, strewn along the drain.Residents claimed the dumping has continued for nearly four years. They alleged that some waste collection vehicles routinely unload garbage beside the drain instead of transporting it to authorised disposal facilities. Despite repeated complaints, they said, the practice has continued unchecked.Ramesh Naik, a street vendor, said the problem worsens every monsoon. “People continue to dump garbage here despite repeated requests not to do so. Whenever it rains heavily, the drain overflows and dirty water spills onto the road in front of our shops. The foul smell makes it difficult for us to work, and many customers avoid the area. We want the authorities to clean the drain regularly and stop dumping at the site,” he said.Residents have urged the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to clear the accumulated waste, prevent further dumping and maintain the drain regularly to prevent recurring flooding.Speaking to TOI, Narendra Bawanka, assistant commissioner of NMC, said he was unaware of the issue but assured that it would be verified and appropriate action taken. Sanitary officer Dinesh Kalode also said he would inspect the site and direct the concerned officials to take necessary action.
