Koraput: A 14-year-old Class VIII student of a govt-run residential school for SC/ST students was found hanging from a tree about 1 km from the school campus in Nabarangpur district on Saturday night.While no foul play was suspected as of now, police said they are probing from all angles. The deceased had returned to the school campus on June 25 after spending time at home, police said.Sources said the incident came to light during dinner when hostel authorities found that three girl students were missing from the dining hall. School staff immediately launched a search operation. While two students were traced within the campus, the third girl was found hanging from a tree, with her dupatta tied around her neck.

Preliminary investigation suggests the girl had allegedly climbed over the hostel boundary wall to leave the campus.With no mobile network available in the girl’s village, a group of teachers went there around 1 am to inform her family about the incident. Her father, accompanied by relatives and villagers, went to the school soon after receiving the information.A complaint was lodged at Umerkote police station seeking a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.“We have registered an unnatural death case and initiated an investigation. Statements of the girl’s family members, school authorities and fellow students are being recorded,” a police officer said.District welfare officer (Nabarangpur) Rabindra Palka said the administration has ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident. “If the investigation establishes any negligence or lapses on the part of the school or hostel authorities, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the rules,” Palka said.
