Lucknow: Doctors at SPM Civil Hospital removed a football-sized fatty tumour (lipoma) measuring 26x12x21 cm from the shoulder of a 59-year-old man.Ashok Kumar, a resident of Shankarpur in Madiaon, first noticed a small swelling behind his right shoulder about three years ago. The swelling gradually increased in size, causing pain and making routine activities difficult.He visited the hospital’s surgery department on July 15, where he was examined by department head Dr Anand Mishra, junior resident Dr Vinod Kumar Verma and their team. After tests, doctors diagnosed him with a giant lipoma — a non-cancerous growth made up of fat tissue — and admitted him for surgery.The operation was performed on July 17 under the supervision of Dr Mishra. Dr Verma, OT assistant Sudesh Kumar and other members of the surgical team assisted in the procedure. Doctors said the entire tumour was removed safely without complications.The patient remained under observation after surgery and received postoperative care. His condition improved steadily and the surgical wound healed well. He was discharged on Sunday and is recovering under medical supervision, hospital officials said.Dr Mishra said giant lipomas can be treated successfully if diagnosed early. He advised people not to ignore unusual lumps or swellings on any part of the body and to seek medical advice for timely diagnosis and treatment.
