Guwahati: Patriotic fervour swept through city schools on Aug 15 as students, teachers and school communities celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with colourful programmes.At Don Bosco School, Panbazar, chief guest Devajyoti Hazarika, former Guwahati Municipal Corporation commissioner, hoisted the national flag before inspecting the parade and receiving a salute from NCC (Army), Sea Scouts and Land Scouts contingents.Hazarika urged students to cherish freedom and shoulder their responsibilities towards the nation’s progress. Principal Fr (Dr) Alex Mathew recalled the sacrifices of those who fought for India’s freedom.South Point School celebrated the occasion with retired Wing Commanders Pranjal Pratim Borgohain and Dr Juri Borgohain as chief guests. School management committee president JM Purkayastha and vice-president Nandita Bhattacharjee were guests of honour.The flag hoisting and national anthem were followed by a march-past by NCC cadets and Cub Bulbul teams, accompanied by the recorder ensemble and NCC brass band. Students presented a chorus, skating demonstration, songs and creative dance.Pranjal Pratim Borgohain urged students to value freedom, fulfil their duties and contribute positively to society. A chess competition was also inaugurated to encourage concentration, strategic thinking and sportsmanship.
