Prayagraj: The 87th martyrdom day of freedom fighter Udham Singh was observed with patriotic fervour at Chandrashekhar Azad Park on Friday. The programme was organised by the Amar Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad and Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Memorial Committee.The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from schoolchildren, who marched to the park carrying placards bearing patriotic slogans. The students raised slogans in honour of Udham Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh before paying floral tributes at the martyr’s memorial.Guests and members of the organising committee also offered tributes to the portrait of Udham Singh and the bronze statue of Chandrashekhar Azad. Personnel of the Uttar Pradesh Armed Police presented a 21-gun salute, while the police band performed patriotic tunes to mark the occasion.Students from basic and secondary schools presented songs, dances and short plays depicting the sacrifices of the country’s freedom fighters.District basic education officer Anil Kumar, the chief guest at the event, recalled Udham Singh’s role in avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He said the revolutionary, who had witnessed the massacre in 1919, remained committed to his vow of bringing those responsible to justice and was eventually executed on July 31, 1940.Garden superintendent Jagdish Prasad highlighted the hardships faced by Udham Singh during his childhood and praised his unwavering dedication to the nation.
