T’puram: The city police have stepped up security and surveillance across Thiruvananthapuram ahead of Onam, deploying around 500 plainclothes personnel and installing nearly 240 surveillance cameras at key locations, said city police commissioner Arul R B Krishna.The security arrangements cover major celebration venues, including Kanakakunnu, Museum, Central Stadium, VJT Hall, Poojappura Mandapam, Putharikandam Maidan and Tagore Theatre. The stretch from Kowdiar to East Fort, along with Veli and Shanghumugham, will also come under heightened surveillance.Police will maintain round-the-clock monitoring at these locations as well as cinema theatres, bus stations and railway stations, where large crowds are expected during the festival season. Face-recognition cameras have been installed at entry points to the city and other crowded locations to help identify criminals and wanted persons entering the city.The police have also deployed sniffer dogs and detection systems to prevent the transportation and distribution of liquor and narcotic substances during the celebrations. Special attention will be given to preventing drug trafficking in crowded areas.As part of Operation Toofan, the city narcotics cell’s Dansaf team will conduct targeted operations against those involved in the possession, distribution and sale of narcotic substances.Pink Police personnel and special women police patrol teams will be deployed extensively to ensure the safety of women and children during the festivities.
