Margao: A citizens’ panel, ‘Aamcho Manis, Aamcho Maan, Swabhimaan‘, on Wednesday projected senior Congress functionary and former bureaucrat Elvis Gomes as its consensus candidate for the 2027 Cuncolim assembly election, piling pressure on Congress not to renominate sitting MLA and leader of opposition Yuri Alemao from the constituency. The event brought together key aspirants for the seat, including Gomes, former SP Tony Fernandes and Dr Jorson Fernandes. Former DySP Sammy Tavares was absent as he was attending a funeral, organisers said.“We have decided that this time we will support whoever is a Cuncolkar, irrespective of which party ticket he contests on. Yuri Alemao is an opposition leader and can contest from anywhere in South Goa,” Tony said.Jorson echoed the sentiment. “Don’t sell Cuncolim for a few empty promises. Protect the swabhimaan of Cuncolim. That is why we have come forward — only one among us will contest, and all of us will support him,” he said.Gomes said, “Whoever among us contests, all of us will support him.”Announcing the panel’s choice, organiser Yatin Talaulikar named Gomes as its consensus candidate.
