Christa Gail Pike, now 50 years old, was convicted of the murder of her classmate Colleen Slemmer when she was just 18. She was scheduled for execution in Tennessee, which has also garnered significant attention, since this would have been the state’s first execution of a woman in at least 200 years.

However, Pike miraculously survived the lethal execution attempt even after administering two doses of pentobarbital.

What is Pentobarbital and how is death penalty injection administered?

Pentobarbital is a barbiturate (anaesthetic) used in lethal injection protocols in several U.S. states, including Tennessee. The drug is intended to induce unconsciousness, followed by paralysis and cardiac arrest, which then leads to death. The procedure typically involves administering a three-drug cocktail, but some states have opted to use pentobarbital as the sole agent for execution.

As the most common form of punishment in the country, lethal injection is the primary method employed for this purpose by the federal government, the U.S. military and 31 states that authorise it. There have been 1,492 executions carried out since 1976 through this method in the U.S., according to Death Penalty Information Center, a not-for-profit organisation.

Due to resistance from drug manufacturers to supplying the drugs commonly used in lethal injections, some states now permit the use of alternative methods when lethal injection is not feasible.

As it has become increasingly difficult to legally obtain the drugs typically used in executions, some states have also begun experimenting with new drugs and alternative drug combinations. This has led to prolonged executions in which prisoners have shown signs of pain and distress. Several states turned to sourcing untested and illegal drugs from compounding pharmacies that are not regulated by the FDA.

What happened during Christa Pike’s failed execution?

Just one hour before her execution was set to happen, a federal appeals court intervened to review allegations of childhood sexual abuse and rape that Pike claimed were not fully considered during her sentencing.

However, later on Wednesday (September 30, 2026), the U.S. Supreme Court intervened, lifted the stay and cleared the way for the State of Tennessee to proceed with the execution.

Pike’s condition following the execution attempt was not immediately made known, and ‌it was not clear after she was taken for medical treatment from the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville what legal avenues her lawyers or ‌the state might pursue next.

Journalists who witnessed the attempted execution described snoring, loud exhales, gasps and complaints ‌from Pike about pain, as well as her kicking her feet so often that she knocked off the sheets laid on her, according to NBC News. At times, the curtain was closed and journalists could only hear sounds.

What happens next?

The Tennessee Department of Correction defended its handling of ‌the high-profile execution, which had been opposed by human rights experts due to Pike’s age at the time of the crime, her history as the victim of childhood sexual abuse and untreated mental illness.

“The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the state’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office,” the ‌agency said in a statement.

“The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening. Christa Pike has been transported to an off-site medical facility,” the ‌statement concluded.

Pike’s lawyers filed a federal court motion during the process seeking to halt her execution, citing witnesses’ accounts that “executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring,” NBC News reported.

Pike was 18 in January 1995 when she, 17-year-old boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp and a third companion lured Slemmer, a classmate at their Knoxville Job Corps vocational center, into a ‌wooded area where they tortured and killed her. The grisly nature of the slaying, which involved the perpetrators carving the shape of a pentagram in the victim’s chest and taking a chunk of her skull as a souvenir of the carnage, drew intense media coverage at the time.
