Trying a new food can come with its own little learning curve. But for one Chinese woman tasting biryani for the first time, it wasn’t the rice, spices or flavours that caught everyone’s attention. It was the way she used a spoon.A video of the woman trying Indian biryani has been making the rounds on social media, with viewers amused by her unusual technique. She appears excited when the plate arrives and wastes little time before trying the dish. Then comes the spoon.Instead of holding it in the usual way, she grips it almost like a pair of chopsticks, using it to pick up the rice before bringing it to her mouth. The technique looks unfamiliar, but she doesn’t seem too bothered. Her attention is firmly on the biryani. And honestly, that’s what makes the clip so amusing. She’s clearly more interested in figuring out the food than worrying about whether she’s using the spoon correctly.

‘Obsessed with chopsticks’

The video prompted plenty of reactions, with many people focusing on the cultural difference in eating habits.“Do you have Chinese biryani? Because we have Indian Chinese food,” one user commented.Another wrote, “Two neighbours sharing their thousands of year old cultures through love. Two countries are related with Buddha, ancient trade, even in India, there is a Chinese community living in Kolkata. They have their whole authentic food market.”“Obsessed with Chopsticks,” read another comment. Some reactions, however, were less about the food and more about the woman herself, with one person writing, “How to marry a Chinese girl.”

Another Chinese food reaction goes viral

This isn’t the first time a Chinese person’s reaction to Indian food has attracted attention online.Earlier, YouTuber Passenger Paramvir filmed a food experience with a Chinese woman who initially believed Indian food was unhygienic. She showed him videos of food being prepared in visibly poor conditions and said they had influenced her perception of Indian food.Paramvir pointed out that such examples don’t represent every food outlet in India and that similar videos can be found from other countries too.He then took her to an Indian restaurant in China, where they ordered dishes including dal makhani, shahi paneer and naan. She was hesitant at first. But after trying the food, her reaction changed quickly. She enjoyed the meal and called it “yummy”.The latest biryani video is much lighter, but it has sparked the same kind of curiosity around food and culture. Sometimes, trying another country’s cuisine is as much about figuring out how to eat it as it is about discovering what it tastes like.
