Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the new multi-storey building at Thiruvananthapuram Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) on Monday. Health minister Veena George stated that RCC, a source of pride for Kerala in cancer treatment, is reaching another milestone in its development with this.The health department is striving to enhance the quality of cancer treatment and provide modern care at reduced costs to patients. The Cochin Cancer Centre was recently realised, and Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC) was elevated to a postgraduate institute. Advanced treatment facilities, including robotic surgery, were established at RCC and MCC. Cancer treatment facilities were expanded in medical colleges. Following this, the 14-storey building at RCC was actualised. This new structure will be a significant boon for RCC, which struggled with space constraints, the minister added.

The multi-storey building, constructed at a cost of Rs 242 crore and spanning 3,30,117sq ft, incorporates advanced facilities for cancer treatment. It will provide state-of-the-art services for cancer patients, including radiotherapy machines, nuclear medicine facilities such as iodine therapy wards, a bone marrow transplant unit, operation theatres, wards, intensive care units, a leukaemia ward, a blood bank and a microbiology department. In addition to existing wards, pay wards and general wards will also be set up. There will be an additional 200 beds for patients, apart from the existing ones. Two levels of parking facilities were arranged. Operations here will maximise the use of solar energy and adhere to green protocols. Pollution control systems will also be in place.
