Patna: What was meant to be a joyous wedding celebration in Rajanpur village under Mahishi block of Saharsa district took an ugly turn when a dispute over the menu triggered a violent clash between the groom’s and bride’s families.The trouble began during the wedding reception held on the night of July 9. According to the groom’s side, they had been assured that mutton would be served at the feast. Instead, guests found chicken on their plates, prompting protests from some members of the baraat.The argument soon spiralled into a scuffle, with members of the bride’s family allegedly attacking the baraatis with sticks and lathis. More than six people from the groom’s side were injured in the clash, police said. No complaint had been lodged by either side till Saturday evening.The incident occurred during the wedding of Md Abdullah alias Chand, son of Md Anwar of Ward No. 12 in Simri Bakhtiarpur Municipal Council, and the daughter of Md Javed alias Moto of Rajanpur village.According to the groom’s family, those injured included Md Ashiq, Md Irfan, Md Hasan, Md Abbas, Md Jabbar, Md Atif and Md Mehboob.The missing mutton soon became the talk of the village, with tension prevailing in the area as members of both sides confronted each other.Saharsa sadar SDPO Alok Kumar said, “As soon as we got information, a police team reached the spot. In the initial investigation, it came to light that the dispute started because mutton was not served at the wedding feast and chicken was served instead. The argument later turned into a fight.”He added that a detailed probe would be conducted and legal action taken after applications were received from both sides.The groom’s family said it would file a complaint, alleging that they had been “cheated” and assaulted for protesting. However, no complaint had been submitted so far.
