Hassan: The mortal remains of Chennamma, wife of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, were laid to rest with full state honours at the family farm in Mavinakere, Holenarasipura on Monday evening. Chief minister DK Shivakumar, Union ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Pralhad Joshi and V Somanna, along with several Karnataka ministers, attended the final rites.Thousands of people from across the state gathered in Mavinakere and Holenarasipura to pay their last respects. Chennamma, 89, passed away on July 18, in Bengaluru. The body was brought from Bengaluru to Hassan late on Sunday, and was kept for public viewing at former minister HD Revanna’s residence in Holenarasipura till 12 noon on Monday.Thousands visited to pay tributes. The mortal remains were later taken in a procession to the burial ground. Hundreds gathered along the route. The rituals were performed as per Vokkaliga community tradition under the guidance of Kannan Swami of Tirumalagiri, JP Nagar, Bengaluru. Priests from Srirangapatna and Melukote also took part.Chennamma’s four sons, including Union minister HD Kumaraswamy and MLA HD Revanna, performed the last rites. An emotional HD Deve Gowda was seen mourning the loss. Kumaraswamy thanked the public, the state govt, district administration and police for the support and arrangements.DGP MA Saleem, Hassan DC KS Latha Kumari and other officials paid floral tributes. The district police offered a gun salute.Security and bandhTo manage the VVIP movement, five temporary helipads were set up — two at Haradanahalli and three in Holenarasipura. Holenarasipura observed a bandh as a mark of respect. Shops remained closed across parts of the district, and schools in Holenarasipura had declared a holiday.Revanna’s son, also Chennamma’s grandson, Prajwal Revanna, who is lodged in jail, remained away from the rituals. Apart from him, all other family members were present.
