CHENNAI: A total of 1,000 new air-conditioned electric buses would be inducted into MTC in Chennai under the gross cost contract, Tamil Nadu finance minister N Marie Wilson announced on Monday while presenting the 2006-07 budget.To support the rollout of the new fleet, Rs 500 crore has been earmarked to upgrade electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure at bus depots, including charging facilities and related infrastructure, he said.The govt has allocated Rs 13,561 crore to the transport department in the budget.The govt has allocated Rs 7,675 crore as subsidy to the state transport undertakings to support their operations. In addition, Rs 2,650 crore has been provided as viability gap funding, while Rs 1,005 crore has been earmarked as equity capital assistance for the transport corporations.
