Kanpur: International Plastic Bag Free Day was observed at Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology on Friday, with a call to ban single-use plastic and raise awareness about its harmful effects.Vice-chancellor Dr Sanjeev Gupta said plastic posed a serious threat to the environment. He warned students about the damage caused by the indiscriminate use of plastic to soil fertility, water sources and the environment through microplastic pollution. He added that there was a need to promote the use of cotton, jute and paper bags in place of plastic bags.The university’s finance controller, Sanjay Kumar Rai, said the day served as a reminder of the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment, wildlife and human health. A plastic bag-free awareness programme was conducted in all hostels of the university, and a pledge was taken not to use plastic bags. The programme was also organised at all Krishi Vigyan Kendras. Meanwhile, NSS volunteers spread the awareness message through posters, slogans and awareness talks.
