Mysuru/Chamarajanagar: Chamarajanagar police are adopting technology to improve traffic management and law enforcement by installing AI-powered cameras to monitor traffic flow, detect violations, and identify vehicles involved in infractions. Chamarajanagar town is located at the intersection of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.Chamarajanagar SP M Muthuraj said that the initiative aimed to enhance monitoring of inter-state vehicles that frequently traversed the region due to its strategic location. He said the deployment of the surveillance systems would enable law enforcement to track and manage traffic in real time, improving road safety. These cameras were connected to a centralised command centre, from where they could be monitored, he stated. The systems could automatically issue fines and alert officers to potential issues. Police said AI technology also aided in maintaining law and order by providing real-time surveillance and analytics, helping to predict and prevent criminal activities. The Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology will work by capturing images of vehicle number plates and processing them through AI algorithms to identify and record vehicle details. The data could be used to monitor traffic flow, detect violations, and assist in enforcing traffic regulations. A total of 14 AI cameras were sanctioned and installed at seven strategic locations to enhance surveillance and security. These locations included four in Chamarajanagar town, Doddarayapete, Kalanhundi Cross, Somwarpet Bypass Road, and Mudalapura, Mudlupura junction, where vehicles from Kerala pass through. The other three places are Naripura Junction, where vehicles from Tamil Nadu pass through, Uththamballi Junction near Kollegel, and another on Hanur Road. “In all, 14 cameras are installed, two each at one place,” Muthuraj explained. He said a proposal was sent to install additional AI cameras at six inter-state checkposts to further bolster monitoring capabilities. Police stated that the implementation of AI technology in these areas is expected to provide real-time data and analytics, aiding quick decision-making and enhancing overall safety measures.
