Chennai: Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari of Kerala high court has been formally appointed as the 55th Chief Justice of Madras high court on Thursday. He succeeds Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, who retired on Thursday. A formal notification from the union ministry of law and justice, dated March 5, said President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice S A Dharmadhikari as the Chief Justice of Madras high court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. A native of Raipur in Chhattisgarh, Chief Justice Dharmadhikari obtained his bachelor’s degree in commerce and law from Nagpur University and enrolled as an advocate in the Madhya Pradesh court in 1992. As a standing counsel and senior standing counsel for the Union govt, Dharmadhikari appeared for the income tax department, the Reserve Bank of India, central excise, district central co-operative bank, Hoshangabad, as well as for various public sector undertakings, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, BSNL, welfare commissioner, and Bhopal gas case. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2016 and was made a permanent judge in 2018. He was transferred to the Kerala high court in April last year.
