New Delhi: Union govt has approved Delhi govt’s proposal to create a separate engineering cadre for the Public Works Department (PWD), bringing 3,214 sanctioned engineering posts out of CPWD cadre.The decision paves the way for an independent Delhi PWD Engineering Cadre, an issue that had remained pending for nearly three decades. Delhi Cabinet, chaired by chief minister Rekha Gupta, had earlier cleared the proposal.Gupta said the separate cadre would help expedite development works, strengthen the engineering system and ensure greater accountability and transparency.The 3,214 sanctioned posts span 36 categories in PWD’s engineering wing. So far, the department’s engineering services have largely depended on CPWD cadre, with appointments made through Centre’s system.Gupta said the new arrangement would enable Delhi govt to ensure adequate availability of engineers, fill vacancies faster, monitor projects more effectively and execute works in line with the capital’s requirements. Delhi is also expected to undertake major infrastructure projects, including construction of a new Secretariat, mini-secretariats in all 11 districts, besides roads, bridges, office buildings and other public assets.A separate cadre, CM said, would allow Delhi govt to link accountability and performance monitoring more closely with its administrative framework.“For nearly three decades, Delhi awaited this important reform. The approval for a separate Delhi PWD Engineering Cadre is a landmark decision that will give the capital a stronger, more accountable and future-ready engineering system,” PWD minister Parvesh Verma said.“This will accelerate infrastructure projects, improve transparency and help us deliver better roads, bridges, public buildings and civic infrastructure to the people of Delhi,” he added.
