Patna: The Union cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved an additional Rs 700 crore for the AIIMS Darbhanga project during its meeting on March 25, Union minister for health and family welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda informed Parliament on Friday.

Responding to a query during question hour in the Lok Sabha, Nadda said the new fund had been provided over and above the previously sanctioned Rs 1,264 crore, taking the total estimated project cost to approximately Rs 1,964 crore.

Nadda also told the House that the Union govt is prioritising the completion of AIIMS Darbhanga and that long-standing execution hurdles are now expected to be resolved.

Sharing information about the Union Cabinet’s decision here on Friday, Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi expressed gratitude to PM Modi for approving an additional Rs 700 crore over and above the previously sanctioned Rs 1,264 crore for the Darbhanga AIIMS project.

“This decision will provide new momentum and strength to this important health project. This decision will prove to be a milestone for Bihar, especially the Mithila region. Whatever obstacles were coming in the construction of the long-awaited Darbhanga AIIMS will now be completely eliminated,” Saraogi told in a statement. Terming it a “historic and pro-public” decision, Saraogi also thanked Nadda and expressed his gratitude.

The AIIMS Darbhanga is being established near the Shobhan-Ekmi bypass in Darbhanga district. The Bihar govt has handed over approximately 187 acres of land to the Centre for the project.

While the project received its first Cabinet nod in Sept 2020, the foundation stone was officially laid by Prime Minister Modi on Nov 13, 2024.

Once completed, the institute is expected to house a 750-bed super-specialty hospital, a medical college with 125 seats, a nursing college with 60 seats, and several specialised healthcare departments.
