Kumar said the statistics of just 500 appeals out of a total of 2.5 crore electorates exemplifies the success of the Special Revision exercise in Assam.
The Chief Election Commissioner was on two days’ visit in the poll bound state . He was accompanied by election commissioners Dr. SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi and other senior officials of the ECI.
He said that while the ECI is carrying out Special Intensive Revision in other poll bound states, in Assam Special Revision was carried out because the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is in its final stage in Assam.
“The motive behind the SR was to ensure that all eligible electorates are included in the electoral rolls and names of all ineligible electorates could be removed from the electoral rolls”.
The CEC said that while they have reviewed the situation in Assam and the state’s poll preparedness, the dates will be finalized after a meeting if the ECI in Delhi
He however, said that the ECI will keep in mind the Rongali Bihu festival, the most popular festivals in Assam while announcing the election dates.He said that the elections will be held across 31486 polling stations in the state and added that each polling station will not have more than 1200 voters to make the voting exercise a smoother experience.
Kumar further said that for the first time the ECI has decided to arrange live webcasts in all the polling stations in the state during the elections to make it more transparent and that there will be colour photographs of the candidates for better understanding of the electorates.
According to the final electoral rolls published by the Chief Electoral Officer Assam, there are a total 2.49 crore eligible electorates in Assam including 1,24,75,583 females and 1,24,82,213 male voters. The final electoral rolls also registered 343 electors from third gender.
Assam Accord assembly
Assam Accord Implementation Minister Atul Bora said that around 1.70 lakh illegal foreigners have been detected in the state as per the provision of Assam Accord 1985, while about 31,000 have been pushed back in the last 40 years.
Bora also stated that the fencing of the India-Bangladesh border in Assam has been nearly completed, except for a 4.35 km stretch.
Bora was replying to a question by Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) legislator Ramendra Narayan said from 1985 to March 12, 2013, 29,663 illegal foreigners were sent back to their country through ‘Push Back’ process.
Between March 13, 2013, and January 31, 2026, Bora said, 468 were sent back through the ‘Deportation’ process, of whom 458 were convicted foreigners and 10 declared foreigners.
Another 1,421 illegal foreigners were ‘Sent Back’ as per orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs between February 1, 2025, and January 31, 2026.
From December 20, 2025, to January 31, 2026, 51 declared foreigners and one new illegal immigrant have been expelled from the country under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950.
Barbed wire fencing has been erected along 228.541 km, with a stretch of 4.35 km left out in Sribhumi district due to objections by the Border Guard Bangladesh.
