Bengaluru: A Common Entrance Test (CET) aspirant saw his rank soar from 1,94,806 to 49,608 — an improvement of over 1.4 lakh places — after Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) decided to consider his revaluated CBSE class 12 marks. The dramatic jump is among the biggest recorded after KEA gave CBSE students a one-time opportunity to update their revised marks. CET ranks are calculated using a 50:50 weightage for class 12 marks and CET score.KEA had initially decided not to consider the revaluated CBSE marks, as is the usual practice. However, after the first CBSE valuation came under criticism over the on-screen marking process, the authority was flooded with requests from students to consider their revised marks. They pointed out that several other states followed the practice and that KEA itself had accepted the revaluated marks for pre-university students.KEA subsequently opened its portal from July 4 to 6 for students to update their revised marks. It received updated scores from 1,177 students, including 407 who submitted revaluated CBSE marks. Spot ranks were issued to all of them.An analysis by KEA showed that while one student’s rank improved from 1,94,806 to 49,608, several others also registered substantial gains. Five students moved up by 20,000-50,000 ranks, while 13 improved by 10,000-20,000 places.“My son gained just two marks after revaluation. But after the revised marks were considered, his CET rank improved by 200 places. This is extremely important because he could now secure a better college. While we are thankful to KEA for providing this opportunity, it is also important for the authority to consider a normalisation process across different boards. PU students generally score higher than CBSE students, and it is easier to secure centums under the PU board. Students from other boards are therefore at a disadvantage,” said one parent.Meanwhile, four students who updated their marks ended up with lower scores. KEA said this was likely because they had entered incorrect marks during the initial submission. The authority had warned candidates that the marks entered must exactly match those on their marks cards, failing which they could face problems during the admission process.“By the time the CBSE revaluation results were announced, the counselling process had already commenced. Initially, there was a view that allowing another opportunity for mark revision at that stage would further delay the entire process. However, KEA has always been committed to taking decisions that are in the best interests of students and the public. Accordingly, a special opportunity was provided,” said H Prasanna, executive director of the authority. “KEA also allowed candidates to complete document verification until the very last moment on the final day (July 9) prescribed for option entry. Through these measures, KEA has once again demonstrated its commitment to being a student-friendly and people-centric institution.”
