‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ is set to hit the theatres after enjoying a great run on OTT in the form of a series. The film has secured an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), just days before its scheduled theatrical release on September 4. The film has been cleared with a runtime of 197 minutes and 19 seconds, translating to 3 hours, 17 minutes and 19 seconds.The clearance came with several modifications, primarily involving language and intimate sequences. At four points, certain expletives were muted, while six abusive words were replaced altogether. The board also sought changes to a handful of dialogues, including “Galey se lag gar”.Among the other alterations, a word in the first half was replaced with “kamar”, while “lanth”, meaning idiot, was modified in the second half. A reference connected to caste was also changed following the board’s direction.The certification process also required the makers to tone down two intimate sequences. The CBFC instructed that their impact be reduced by 50 per cent through changes to both visuals and sound. One of the sequences appears before the interval, while the other occurs in the second half. The certification record indicates that roughly 35 seconds of intimate material was removed.Notably, the CBFC did not ask for any cuts to the film’s violent or graphic portions. The decision comes as the much-loved streaming franchise makes its transition to the big screen, with the film retaining the gritty atmosphere and intense world that audiences associate with the series.The theatrical feature was cleared by the CBFC’s Revising Committee. Under the usual certification process, a film is initially reviewed by the Examining Committee. If the filmmakers object to the proposed changes or the committee recommends significant modifications, they can seek a fresh assessment from the Revising Committee.However, a source close to the production has disputed the suggestion that the film underwent significant cuts. The source said the theatrical version was cleared with “hardly any modifications” and maintained that there were no cuts to the film. Addressing reports about approximately 35 seconds of footage being removed, the source said the changes were limited and did not interfere with the filmmakers’ vision.“This means audiences will get to experience the much-awaited theatrical adaptation exactly the way the makers intended it to be seen, retaining its raw, unfiltered essence on the big screen,” the source said.Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment.
