Nagpur: The Rs80.75-crore Nandgram cattle shelter at Mouza Wathoda is nearing completion with 69 of the proposed 70 cattle sheds have already been completed. Once operational, the facility is expected to provide a permanent solution for impounding stray cattle that have become a major traffic hazard and public nuisance across city.According to the latest project status report of Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Project-3 division, the veterinary hospital, RCC administrative building and internal roads are also ready, while work on the front compound wall and 18-metre and 24-metre Development Plan roads is in progress.The shelter assumes significance as Nagpur currently has only 50 legally registered cattle sheds, while a civic survey conducted a couple of years ago had identified 1,043 illegal cattle sheds.

The absence of adequate authorised shelter space has often hampered civic action against stray cattle despite repeated complaints from citizens about road accidents and sanitation issues.A TOI spot survey on Saturday found stray cattle freely roaming on several city roads, disrupting traffic and posing a hazard to motorists. After Nandgram facility’s completion, the civic administration is expected to intensify its drive against illegal cattle sheds and stray cattle roaming on roads, particularly in busy commercial areas and major traffic corridors.Another prestigious civic project, the Rs107.18-crore Shrimant Raje Raghujirao Bhonsale Town Hall at Mahal, has also entered its final phase. The RCC structure comprising two basements, ground floor and four upper floors has been completed, along with Aluminium Composite Cladding (ACP) work. Interior finishing and selection work is currently underway. The project has received a six-month extension for completion.The Rs15.60-crore Ultra Modern E-Library at Mominpura is also close to completion. RCC work, brick masonry, internal plastering and flooring have been completed, while GFRC panelling, electrical installations and other finishing works are in progress. The contractor has also been granted a six-month extension.However, progress on the Rs18.15-crore Late Prabhakarrao Datke Hospital at Mahal remains slow.
