Jharsuguda: In a boost to regional connectivity and trade, cargo operations at Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Airport, Jharsuguda, are set to commence soon, airport director Upendra Nath Dhaundia said on Monday.The development follows a high-level security vetting conducted by a committee led by J P Baxla, regional director of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), Bhubaneswar. The, including senior officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), intelligence agencies, airline representatives and cargo operations, assessed the feasibility of cargo movement through the passenger terminal.During a visit, the committee carried out a comprehensive inspection of both city-side and airside areas of the terminal building to evaluate security preparedness for handling cargo operations. Officials examined infrastructure, operational protocols and safety measures required for the proposed cargo movement.“The cargo service will start shortly at VSS Airport. A meeting chaired by the BCAS regional director was held, and a site visit was conducted. The team acknowledged the airport’s potential for both inbound and outbound cargo. Necessary approvals are expected soon, after which operations will begin,” Dhaundia said.He added that initially, cargo operations will begin on a limited scale, considering the existing infrastructure. “As of now, we will start with a small cargo movement. Expansion will depend on future demand and infrastructure upgrades,” he said.“The introduction of cargo services is expected to enhance logistics capabilities in western Odisha and provide a major push to local industries and businesses by enabling faster transportation of goods,” said Suresh Tulshyan, a businessman of Jharsuguda.
