Gurgaon: Five people, including four Haryana govt officials and a truck driver, were injured after a canter rammed into an SUV on Southern Peripheral Road on Tuesday. The driver — Mahendra, a resident of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh — was arrested and granted bail. Those injured, including Mahendra, were taken to Civil Hospital in Sector 10 and were discharged. The incident took place in Gurgaon’s Sector 77 area around 1am when a team — led by Mahim Sharma, an assistant excise and taxation officer (AETO) — was conducting routine vehicle checking. Sharma reached Gurgaon from Panchkula on official duty a day earlier, accompanied by driver Deshraj, attendant Umesh and EHC Krishan Kumar.According to a complaint, lodged by the AETO, the team was stationed in a govt Scorpio and signalled the truck to stop using a torch and hand gestures. “The truck continued at high speed and crashed into the SUV. The impact caused the govt vehicle to overturn, trapping the occupants inside,” the complaint stated.Police said passers-by helped pull the injured officials out of the overturned vehicle. The force of the collision was such that the cabin portion of the canter also collapsed, leaving the driver injured. An officer said the canter had an open, uncovered body and was not carrying any goods at the time of the incident.Police registered a case under sections 125(a) (act endangering life), 281 (rash driving) and 324(4) (mischief) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita at Khedki Daula police station.
