Mangaluru: Canara college on Jail Road will become an autonomous institution from the next academic year. The five-decade-old college, which currently serves 1,569 students, received autonomous status from the UGC and will implement it from next year. It will also introduce three high-demand, job-oriented courses.Addressing reporters on Wednesday, CHSA president D Vasudev Kamath said the college was established in 1973 by the Canara High School Association and is affiliated to Mangalore University. The institution holds an ‘A’ grade from NAAC with a CGPA of 3.2. It has 85 qualified lecturers and staff.
The college has secured 135 university ranks over 53 years, including 12 ranks in 2023–24 and 2024–25. Correspondent M Jagannath Kamath said autonomy marks a major milestone, offering academic freedom in curriculum design, examinations and evaluation. He said degrees will continue to be awarded by Mangalore University, carrying the tag ‘Autonomous College’.The institution stated that autonomy will function under UGC, state govt and university guidelines, with quality assurance through the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and academic audits.In line with industry needs, the college has proposed new programmes: BBA in logistics, BCA in data analytics, and BCom in business data analytics.
