It’s vague enough to mean literally anything, a five-minute scheduling question or a serious performance conversation, and that ambiguity is exactly what makes it unsettling. Career advice writers have noted that managers rarely realise how much anxiety a bare “can we talk” triggers, since it strips away every bit of context a person needs to prepare themselves. Something as simple as naming the topic upfront, “quick call about the Thursday deadline”, would remove most of the dread instantly, but somehow it rarely happens.
