Bhubaneswar: In the aftermath of the fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, the social security and empowerment of persons with disabilities (SSEPD) department has directed officials to ensure strict fire safety measures in buildings catering to persons with disabilities. In a recent directive, additional secretary Sonia Behera asked district social security officers (DSSO)s, nodal officers of district disability rehabilitation centres (DDRC)s and other authorities concerned to prioritise fire safety compliance and obtain certification from the state fire and emergency services. The department stressed that fire safety is critical, particularly in facilities serving children and persons with disabilities, who may face challenges during emergencies. Officials have been instructed to ensure installation and proper maintenance of fire safety systems such as alarms, smoke detectors and sprinklers, along with the use of fire-resistant materials. The advisory called for clear and accessible exit routes, regular inspection of electrical installations, and well-defined evacuation protocols to minimise risks and prevent loss of life and property in the buildings. The directive applies to DDRCs, ARCs, Special Institutions for Education and Empowerment of Persons, and State Institute for Developmental Rehabilitation facilities across multiple districts. Authorities have been asked to take immediate steps to implement the measures and ensure compliance at the earliest.
